Regency Berger Chair

The left arm of this Regency Bergerchair was very warped and twisted. It was straightened by making a series of saw cuts down its length. Care was taken to follow the valleys in the reeded moulding whilst cutting proceeded. This meant that once the moulding was reworked there would be no evidence of the repair.

A copy of the curve shown by the right arm was made by copying it in heavy wood. The saw kerftaken by the cutting of lines down the left arm would be replaced with veneer. The veneer inserts and the cuts in the arm were thoroughly coated with glue and assembled. The whole arm was then cramped to the former and allowed to dry. Once dry the assembly was removed and the arm was once again straight.

Decorative Vine Table

This interesting vine table had many of its leaves missing. On close inspection the leaves were made of leather. Intrigued by the realistic shape of the leaves I wondered how the craftsman had managed to shape the leather to imitate realistic leaf. I found that if the leather was left to soak in medium strength pearl glue until soft any shape could be imparted to it. One of the properties of this glue is that once cool. it gels So the leaf was held until it gelled, then put aside to dry. Once dry the leaves were coated with gesso and polished smooth ready to take the paint.
